The Blogging Bug!

My first, albeit quickly aborted, attempt at blogging was a few years ago when I fancied myself as a cricket statistician who would thrill fellow cricket nuts with the ability to wander through the maze of cricketing statistics and conjure up some brilliant insights that would alter people's perceptions regarding the "worth" or "value" of some players. In particular, my blog was targeted at weeding out the flashy but ultimately under performing players (lots of sub-continent cricketers come to mind!). This attempt was aborted due to several reasons:
1. The emergence of cricinfo and superior statisticians with access to a huge database.
2. The lack of interest that my blogs generated
3. The time required to come up with meaningful analyses and the fact that I was desperately struggling to juggle full-time work and at least 20 hours of study per week.
4. The annoying, pointless drivel that people posted as comments or reactions to my "findings".

Clearly, idiotic comments are still likely to be a problem but hopefully the other problems can be solved by dedicating the blog to relatively mundane events rather than the exciting world of cricket statistics!

Now, after reading quite a few interesting blogs, my interest has been rekindled and I am curious as to how some of my friends will perceive my writings - will they consider it to be trivial, useless, downright pathetic or heaven forbid, actually interesting? This is the prime motivation for this blog...granted, I do not expect frank feedback from many people about my blogging skills (or lack thereof). I hope at least some close friends and my family will tell me the truth.

The other purpose of the blog is also to keep a virtual record of the places that my wife and I plan to visit and our experiences. We have promised each other that the first few years of our marriage will involve visiting new places, particularly in and around Sydney. As of now, it appears that the promises will be kept but it is anyone's guess as to whether it will continue to be translated into reality!

I really should be getting back to work now...more later. Watched American Gangster last night so maybe shall write something about that in the next blog!

After all the blogging bug has hit you. No matter how much you avoided it, you have finally been caught in it;-) It would be good to see some blogging on topics apart from "sports".

B.Srinivas says,is your blog going to be a diary or a travelogue?

Aravind said...

Probably a bit of both...not quite a diary but more of a travelogue and some place where I can write random things!

Good to see that you are going to write. "My wife and I have promised each other..."..oh my god, you sound so old :-)

and why "kurtosis" of life ? are you trying to say that life has fat tails ? (which of course, it does, else we math-stat ppl will be out of business :-D )

btw, also write a proper "about me" on your blog. and a sitemeter (http://www.sitemeter.com/) if you haven't already..you can keep track of ur visitors, learn about them etc

With the relatively less blogging experience that i have, i can say you have all the traits to become one. If someone can banter on for one whole page of the word doc, without saying anything more than "this is my first blog and i shall keep coming back", then u have it in u!! :) :)JK! Kudos and way to go! Will be waiting, but would also expect some sports related stuff amongst the myriad of other stuff!!

Dinesh: what are you trying to say? That I can bullsh*t effectively? Perhaps I should do an MBA then? :)

Ninju: will do that and the sitemeter, still havent had time. I actually quite like using the term 'my wife' :) It feels weird at first but gotten used to it now! Makes me feel strangely empowered!

Ninju: The reason for Kurtosis is indeed fat-tails...I guess what I was trying to say was in life, we tend to have highs and lows for things that really are irrelevant in the long-run. For e.g., worrying about 10th std board exams is so irrelevant. Therefore, what I am saying is that our emotions and consequently, our behaviour do not follow a bell-shaped pattern.

Ah!!!!! So its the start of the second innings and I hope this ones a long one!!!!

When I first started blogging, which was 3 yrs ago, I used to write with a view to get a good viewer base. Over these years, i have come to realise that I blog because I like to write, to diarise my experiences to be able to go back to them and relive them, to be able to share my experiences with others(who are interested). I have cared less about comments and cared less about writing stuff that readers will relate to.

It is my blog and I write what I like. Thats what makes a blog different from a syndicated newspaper column.

As for writing on specialised subjects(like cricket), it is important to write in a related forum or website (like a cricket portal or a cricket forum) OR you must be able to market the blog among the target audience. I guess neither happened with your cricket blog.

Thats just my 2 cents, from what little I have learnt about blogging :)

I must admit I had to wiki Kurtosis, but an interesting title nonetheless:)

Welcome back and looking fwd to more tales from you :)
